Where as movies like Dances With Wolves don’t necessarily age well with me, this movie felt like an old dusty bottle of wine found in the cellar, perfect for any setting, easy to take down, and simply delicious. Saw the prop for the big fish from the movie.

TL/DR My dad and I were taught how to flyfish by an older man that taught Brad Pitt how to flyfish for the movie. Caught many more that trip, completely surreal experience. Sure enough, a few casts in I pull out a lunker brown trout, which I released and walked back to the cabin beaming. Signatures and pictures with the cast and crew.Īfter a full day of learning (fly-tying, casting, gear management, etc) this guy tells me to go to specific spot on the river at 6:30 and to use the fly I tied with him.The actual monster fish that this man had crafted by hand for the movie, along with a dozen other little props.One of the poles Pitt uses in the movie.In the process of learning he tells us that he was one of the experts who taught Brad Pitt how to flyfish for the movie. He hears about our issues and then proceeds to spend hours with us learning to flyfish. I went on a fishing trip with my dad to Montana (we had never flyfished before) and one of the days after no success on the river, we ran into an old man in the cabin next to ours. I loved the movie through and through, as cheesy and predictable as it was, and can’t wait to watch it again.hopefully someday with my own son, inspiring ourselves to venture into the woods with a fishing pole and a tackle box.
Not to say the movie didn’t do this, but it did it all so so well.I was completely caught in the spell of this movie, with its (at times bad) poetic script and its heartfelt performances, with its beautiful shots of Montana and amazing scenes of Brad Pitt fishing.not to mention Robert Redford’s endearing narration.
It seemed like it would pander to the father / son / brother relationship troupe too much, it seemed like it would romanticize “the great outdoors” to a point of exhaustion and it would attempt to paint “simpler American times” in a light only found in American novellas, not in actual history books. With that said, I really didn’t think I was going to enjoy A River Runs Through It. I enjoy classic movies, I can take in art house films, I like nuanced performances, I appreciate unique film styles and always seems to gravitate toward more indie films. I’d like to consider myself a mid level film watcher.
